Spotlight on…is a unique look at individuals from Venues and Events International providing insight into their daily roles and why they have a passion for the meetings and events industry. Here is our latest Spotlight on…Steve Schwartz, Account Director.
I have been at Venues and Events 9 months now, and feels like longer than this as I have known the team for many years now and had already felt like part of the ‘Family’ a long time ago!
I would have to say that it is still The Midland hotel in Manchester, as it is such an iconic building with so much history and with some great facilities to offer. Also, if you are a fan of celebrity spotting… then this is a good hotel to do it in.
I love a challenge and I am definitely a people’s person, and I have learned over the years that one of my key strengths is my relationship with clients. Building trust, being honest and having transparency with clients is key to winning business. So with my knowledge of over 20 years within the hotel industry, and my key strengths in client relationships and strategically managing accounts I wanted to make the switch. I have known Venues and Events International for many years now, and I have seen first-hand how well they can deliver an event and what positive feedback their clients give them. I want to help them reach their 2020 vision, and I believe that with the team we have in place we will certainly exceed it!
I would say switching from working in Hotels to Agency, as I have been working for hotels all my life (from the age of 17) and now I have switched from ‘what most people say’ I have turned to the dark side… but if I’m honest I think I’m definitely on the light/right side.
There is no such thing as a typical day in my role if I’m honest, as it varies from day to day. I’m mostly on the road meeting with our clients and key stakeholders or I could be in the office catching up with the team here in Swindon, to then having afternoon tea with clients at the Shangri-La hotel. It really does vary and that’s what I love about it. We all pull together as a team, and that’s what makes it work!
I would probably say that coming from hotels, the agency lingo and approach to suppliers is slightly different to what I was used too. But I think I’m certainly there now!
Do your research on any new and upcoming quirky venues, as this is certainly the trend at the moment with a lot of clients. They are looking for something fresh, modern and quirky to consider for their event. Visit as many hotels as physically possible, so you can share with them first-hand what the venue has to offer!
I like to live year to year, so this is a tough question for me! However I would say that I love my role as Account Director, and would like to continue to develop and be promoted in the near future.
Knowing that we have had some great successes during the week, and that the team have continued to deliver in customer satisfaction and ensuring all of our clients are happy gives me that ‘Friday Feeling’. Also though, to know I’m going to spend some quality time with the family over the weekend!
