Spotlight on…is a unique look at individuals from Venues and Events International providing insight into their daily roles and why they have a passion for the meetings and events industry. Here is our latest Spotlight on…Kim Collins, Chief Operating Officer.

How long have you been at Venues and Events International?

6 Months this time round! 13 years previously

What would you say is your favourite venue or destination?

Favourite Venue – Pelican Hill in California.  Favourite Destination – South Africa or Las Vegas

What made you want to become a Chief Operating Officer?

My love for people, seeing people’s journey and supporting them in their success.  My love for clients and always putting them at the heart of what I do.  My passion for operational excellence in venue find and events, for me no booking is too small, I want to ensure all clients receive the same level of service and expertise across the board.  Lastly my desire to be part of a business that is dynamic, loyal, fun, passionate and has a willingness to adapt and change so the client’s needs have been delivered.

What is your biggest highlight of your career so far?

Being promoted to my current role before I was 40!

Can you describe a typical day of your job?

There is no typical day!  One day I could be onsite for an event supporting and helping the team deliver excellence for our clients, the next I could be at a review with procurement talking strategically and giving recommendations of change, the next I could be in the office reviewing our internal processes, talking with our teams, maybe having a brainstorm on a new brief or tender we have received.  No day is the same!  This is a small snapshot but this is why I love my job because it is never the same!

What’s been your biggest challenge to date?

Having to manage a situation when the person does not suit the role they are in, however, the outcome was good!  I moved them into what I felt a more suitable role and they shone!  7 years on they are now running their own events team and are very successful!

What top tip would you give to anyone coming into the industry?

Work hard, play hard, don’t be afraid of change and always ensure you love what you do.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Still loving my job!

What gives you that #FridayFeeling?

Having a beer with the team to say thanks for a great week!
